Sensor technology for today's water problems

Development of a low-cost fluoride sensor for online monitoring

At ICCW, we are actively working on the development of low-cost fluoride sensing technology. This project is coming up in collaboration with IIT Madras and the initial funding from IIT Madras Foundation. The objectives of this project are to develop a user-friendly smartphone attachment for the testing and data collection of fluoride in groundwater. The technology-based on a dye and nanoparticle composite is substantially cheaper as compared to other technologies available in the market. It costs only 50 paise per assay to test one fluoride sample. A device developed for the same is shown in the above photograph. This technology is in the concluding stage and very soon a sensing unit for the online monitoring of fluoride in water will be available.
