Analysis Lab

Analysis Lab

  • Analysis lab performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for compounds and substances to find their precise properties, composition nature, and reactive tendencies of the given components. The lab carries out analysis using instruments of gas chromatography with mass spectrometry, flame ionization detector, electron capture detector, purge and trap.
  • The lab also has high-performance liquid chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy, quantitative spectrophotometer and electrodes. The lab has a quantitative spectrophotometer as a new addition.
  • Our lab provides additional analytical facilities including imaging and XPS.

Atomic absorption spectrophotometer

Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) is an easy, high-throughput technology used to analyze elements in solution. Samples are first atomized so that their characteristic wavelengths are emitted and recorded.

Specification
  • Instrument: Atomic absorption spectrometer
  • Model: iCE 3500 AAS
  • Manufacturer: The Thermo Scientific
  • Key features: The sensitivity is in the ppb range and a powerful tool used for the measurement of elements in the following mode
  • Flame mode: Measurement of Ag, Bi, Ca, Cd, Cu, Cr, Co, Fe, Hg, Pb, Mg, Mn, Ni, Sb, Tl and Zn in water using air/acetylene flame. Al, As, B, Ba, Be and Se are determined by nitrous oxide/acetylene flame.
  • Furnace mode: measurement of Ca, Fe, As, Sb, Bi, Cu, Cr, Pb, Mn, Hg, Ni, Ag, B, Al, Ba, Be, Cd and Se in water.
  • VP 100 mode: As, Bi, Se, and Sb are measured by decomposing their volatile hydrides in a flame. Elemental Hg is obtained from its volatile hydride without the use of heat (cold vapor  technique).

Ultra-performance liquid chromatography with Fluorescence Diode-Array Detector

Ultra High-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) is an important liquid chromatography technique used for the segregation of different components in mixtures.

Specification
  • Instrument Name: Ultra-performance liquid chromatography with Fluorescence Diode-Array Detector
  • Model:  Nexera X2
  • Manufacturer: The Shimadzu
  • Key features: The principle of UPLC is based on the Van Deemter equation which correlates between the flow rate of particles and plate height, and contributes to improved speed, resolution and sensitivity. The photodiode array detector- allows high sensitivity and fast sampling. It offers ultra-low baseline pulsation, ultra-fast injection, and a temperature-controlled flow cell with cooling functions allowing excellent peak area reproducibility concerning room temperature fluctuations. It is more selective, sensitive with high-resolution performance, faster-resolving power, and assures end-product quality.
  • Application of UHPLC analysis is in the estimation of pesticides in water, peptide mapping, toxicity studies, phytoconstituents and pharmaceutical contaminants in water.

Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry

The Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) instrument separates chemical mixtures into individual substances when heated. The heated gases are carried through a column with an inert gas, they flow into Mass spectrometry which identifies the components at a molecular level. It is one of the most accurate tools for analyzing environmental samples.

Specification
  • Instrument Name: Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry, flame ionization detector, electron capture detector and purge and trap
  • Model: 7890B GC Systems, 5977B GC/MSD and ATOMX-XYZ GC/Purge and trap
  • Manufacturer: Agilent Technologies
  • Key features: It is a very sensitive tool and selective for multi-element analysis, widely used for analyzing environmental samples, Organophosphorus, and organochlorine pesticides, semi-volatile organic compounds, volatile organic compounds in drinking water, fatty acids, pollutants in the air, etc.

Quantitative Spectrophotometer

QSPM is based on a spectrophotometric method in the visible range for quantitative determination of ions based on complexation with respective reagents and is used to build the perfect tool for water analysis.

Specification
  • Instrument Name: Quantitative Spectrophotometer
  • Model:  Spectroquant® Prove 600
  • Manufacturer: Merck
  • Prove 600 is preprogrammed for over 180 Spectroquant® cell and reagent test kits and methods. It can detect the lowest analyte concentrations, and avoid damage to cooling and boiler water systems. It features greater cell size compatible with 10, 50 and 100-mm formats for greater sensitivity.

Electrode Meter

Specification
  • Instrument Name: Electrode meter with Fluoride, Nitrate, Dissolved Oxygen, TDS, Conductivity and pH  electrode
